Red Oak Leaf Vase
Carved stoneware, sculptural relief of a red oak leaf. The background was carved away and tentative additions of clay gave undulation and vitality to the leaf. Unglazed background with lightly glazed leaf surface.
This bold first-step piece launched sculptural relief carving explorations in stoneware. During the same years the stoneware carving paralleled exploration of delicate carving of porcelain pieces. It was a very exciting time in the growth of my work.
7.7 x 5.3 Dia x Ht inches

(Reduction fired to cone 10 in an early Minnesota Flat Top kiln built by Nils Lou and myself in 1976.)
